Safety Tips for Contractors Who Rent

1. Wear Safety Belts

Sure, heavy machinery moves slow and a construction site isn’t exactly the I-80 in terms of traffic, but a safety belt doesn’t merely protect an operator in the event of a collision; it keeps him inside his machine’s rollover protection structure (ROPS). Construction sites often have uneven ground, and rollovers happen (not only while the machine is in motion, but also during loading and unloading). Protect your crew by making sure they stay safe inside their ROPS.

2. Properly Enter and Exit Machines

A tractor isn’t a jungle gym, so don’t let your crew treat it like one! Operators should mount and dismount facing the equipment and using the steps and rails provided by the manufacturer. Keeping steps and handrails clean (free of mud or other debris) and well lit can also help prevent accidents. Operators should maintain three points of contact at all times when entering and exiting their machine, and work boots should be kept clean to avoid slips.

3. Know Where Underground Lines are Buried

It’s easier than most people think. By dialing 8-1-1 from anywhere in the country a few days prior to digging, contractors can reach a call center that coordinates communication with all utilities. 811 will instruct the relevant utilities to dispatch a locator, who will mark any underground structures for you. This is a free service, so it’s an easy and inexpensive way to protect your workers.
